West Coast suffered a heavy home loss to the Bombers, who opened up a 45 point lead by the final change before an eight-goal last quarter by the Eagles made some cosmetic improvements to the scoreboard. Captain Ross Glendinning tallied 11 marks and five goals despite having to spend time in defence on dominant Essendon forward Paul Salmon, and rover David Hart kicked three from 20 touches.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The Eagles' defence did not come to terms with Salmon's height and, with Roger Merrett playing a strong, rugged game, Essendon won clearly up forward. What Salmon did not mark, Essendon's smaller forwards gathered in or the giant spearhead picked up in the form of free kicks as Michael Brennan, Glendinning and Andrew Lockyer in turn vainly scragged when they could do nothing else.

West Coast's gallant last quarter reduced the margin from 45 points at three-quarter time and it looked a winning chance when Laurie Keene added two quick goals midway through the term.

But Salmon added his ninth and 10th goals to clinch the game, then one more for good measure after West Coast scored three goals as time-on began."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The 1983 Brownlow medallist picked up Salmon at the five-minute mark of the second term when he already had five on the board. .

But the Eagles' forward line collapsed without him and the Bombers took control of what had been an even match.

At half time the Eagles were lucky to be within 20 points and reduced that to 14 early in the third term. •

But Essendon put the match beyond doubt with six goals in 15 minutes — three to Salmon — and led by 45 points at the final change."[2]
