Coming out of the mid-season bye, West Coast dominated Essendon everywhere except the scoreboard, with the Eagles recording 20 more scoring shots but their inaccuracy in front of goal limiting the final margin to 35 points. The home side weathered an early push from the Bombers and controlled play for most of the remainder of the game. Dom Sheed had a game-high 36 possessions and two goals and Jack Redden recorded 30 touches in his 200th AFL game.

"I was really pleased with the way we played. We’ve been working really hard on our defence that last couple of weeks after the Sydney game. Going in with that focus against a team like Essendon who are really dangerous, in particular off the turnover. I thought we defended well tonight. We didn’t convert, and that was frustrating, but if we play like that every week we’ll win some games.

"We worked hard on some individual match-ups, but I think it was a result of the collective, with the way we defended. There’s always the case with dangerous, small, quick players. Last year (against Essendon) we got taught a lesson, in particular early. We wanted to stop that, but that was a byproduct of probably good team effort.

"I’m going to say it again, but I think we defended well behind the ball. In the second quarter we had 17 turnovers in the front half. I don’t know where we rank in the comp; it’s not in the top 10. It starts with our mids and they were pretty dominant at stages tonight. They gave supply and then our ability to keep it in our front half was a really basic message but we executed quite well."

"Essendon led by 10 points late in the opening term, but the game was turned on its head from that point on.

West Coast posted 20 consecutive inside 50s either side of quarter-time, with only their inaccuracy saving Essendon from a first-half blowout.

But when Kennedy nailed two goals in as many minutes to start the third, the floodgates had well and truly opened as West Coast opened up a match-winning 44-point lead.

Essendon forward Orazio Fantasia, who was pinched relentlessly by Hawthorn captain Ben Stratton last week, was held to just six disposals by Brad Sheppard."

"The Eagles went into the game with the ninth-best percentage in the competition and won an incident-laden contest by 35 points. The result put the reigning premiers back into the four, but the margin should have been much bigger. They had 25 more inside 50s than the Bombers and 20 more scoring shots in the 14.22 (106) to 11.5 (71) victory.

In the second quarter especially, West Coast was wasteful, kicking 4.10 despite having 23 inside 50s to the Bombers four. They led at that stage by just 19 points.

Josh Kennedy booted 3.5 for the game after he had 1.5 next to his name at the main break. The Bombers kicked four goals in the first term and led by 10 points.

Zach Merrett and Dyson Heppell were outstanding – and they finished strongly with four more goals in the last quarter. However for too much of the game, scoring was difficult for Essendon, while the home side produced chance after chance on the back of solid work from Dom Sheed, Jack Redden, in his 200th game, and Elliot Yeo."

A strong West Coast side comfortably accounted for WAFL strugglers East Fremantle to celebrate the return of injured pair Nic Naitanui and Tom Barrass and the comeback from retirement of Drew Petrie. The Eagles held East Fremantle scoreless in the first term and put the game out of reach by half-time, before rain turned the second half into a slog. Brayden Ainsworth had a team-high 28 possessions and Jarrod Brander kicked two goals from 26 touches, with the only dampener a cork suffered by Barrass in the final term.
