A flat West Coast were blown away early by the Bombers, who kicked six goals to nil in the first quarter en route to a 28 point win. The Eagles lifted their intensity and dominated play in the second half but a forward line missing both Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling squandered numerous chances to narrow the gap. From the coach[]
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"First quarters rarely decide a game, but that came as close as any.
Yes, the fact that there was no Jack Darling and no Josh Kennedy was telling in the end. The Eagles actually finished with more scoring shots than the Bombers - 22 to 20 - but they really lacked focus going forward, something that can happen when you’re used to having one of the most prolific modern goal-kickers occupying your forward line.
But the thing that was absolutely unforgivable, which will be replayed again and again at team meetings early in the week, was how the Bombers were given free rein to run right through the middle of the ground.
Half-back runners like Adam Saad torched West Coast in the opening term. And forwards like Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti were allowed to stroll out of stoppages and kick goals around the corner"[1]
The Age[]
"The Bombers' tactic to carry the ball and deliver it into their attack sapped West Coast's defensive strength, with Jeremy McGovern out of the game as well.
Essendon also took advantage of the Eagles missing their two key forwards and leading goalkickers, Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling, through injury. Cale Hooker and Michael Hurley took advantage of the missing West Coast big men.
The Eagles finally managed to stem the early flow of Essendon goals after being 49 points down early in the second quarter. But they didn’t have anyone in attack who looked likely to kick multiple goals."[2]
East Perth report[]
Round 12 (23 June)
East Perth were comfortably beaten by Claremont at home, with a rally either side of half-time and three late goals masking what was a dominant Tigers display. Brayden Ainsworth kicked three goals from 22 possessions and Luke Partington had a team-high 27 disposals.
