From the coach[]
"Yeah it was really disappointing, the end result. So the boys are pretty flat obviously along with us as the coaches. We did a lot of things right throughout the day, but we couldn't hang on.
"...There was probably a set shot at goal with eight minutes to go to put us 20 points up. So I thought we had a heap of supply in the last quarter and our team defence was pretty good in the front half. It was good turnovers, good opportunities, 56 or 57 inside 50s. But the ones they got through, they scored. So we'll take a lot of positives out of tonight with how we want to play and what we want to be known for. But to not get the points and to be 15, 16 points up with eight or nine minutes to go - I don't think we tried to save the game. I thought Melbourne just threw everything at us and it came off for them.
"...Goal kicking cost us in the end really, and missing some opportunities when we clearly had them was costly when you lose a game by 3 points with 20 seconds to go."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"It took the Eagles just a minute to take the lead back in the third term as Petrie slotted his fourth.
The teams traded goals from there as the contest went to another level before Tom McDonald slotted consecutive majors to make it a 10-point margin.
West Coast responded with four of the next five goals to steal the momentum back and take an eight-point advantage into the last quarter.
A piece of brilliance from Mark Hutchings inside two minutes saw the Eagles get out by 14 points."[1]
The Age[]
"West Coast had led by 16 points at the 17-minute mark of the final term when Lewis Jetta missed a set shot.
Even though he'd missed, the Eagles had kicked the two previous goals and looked to be running out the game the better.
An AC injury to Viney early in the third term had looked to have sunk the Demons' chances.
Viney was clearly the best player on the ground in the opening half, with 23 touches, a goal and five clearances. His efforts saw the Demons in front by five points at half-time."[2]
PerthNow[]
"The Eagles had led by 16 points midway through the final term and as the crowd filed out in shock, the players looked just as dumbfounded.
On a night when both teams were missing their star spearheads, Drew Petrie and McGovern couldn’t have done any more for the Eagles.
They presented all night, dragging down a combined 17 marks and kicking seven goals between them.
It still wasn’t enough and the Demons, powered by a heroic performance from captain Jack Viney, wouldn’t be denied."[3]
East Perth report[]

Appearing for East Perth: Butler, Giles, Gorter, Lamb, Lycett, Masten, McInnes, Mutimer, Partington, Rotham, Snadden, Watson, Wellingham.
