West Coast produced an upset and confirmed they will be a force to be reckoned with in 2011, beating the high-flying Blues side in Melbourne to sit just outside the top four. Six goals in the second term set up the win for the Eagles, who took the points over Carlton for the first time since Chris Judd switched sides. Ashley Smith impressed with 21 touches and two goals, Scott Selwood nullified Judd and Mark Nicoski added a couple of goals in his long-awaited 100th game.

From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Ratten had clearly unsettled the Eagles' set-up with Judd tagging his dangerous old mate Kerr while trying to shake Selwood.
It worked for a while, but as the game balanced West Coast's powerful runners became a significant factor as they regained control by relentlessly driving forward.
They kicked four of the five goals of the term and, significant, two of them were booted by defenders Ashley Smith and Will Schofield as the Eagles pushed up the ground en masse.
Matt Priddis was as dangerous as any player as he gradually shook the tag of David Ellard and the Eagles were rightful 22-point leaders with a quarter to play."[2]
Daily Advertiser[]
"Not the least contributor to West Coast's win was Scott Selwood, whose vigilant watch on Chris Judd kept him to merely six disposals by half-time, and 17 for the match. The slack was more than the Blues could pick up. In Ratten's estimation, Carlton won 20 of the 120 minutes, five at the beginning and 15 at the start of the third quarter.
Ratten thought the Blues had sabotaged their own cause by an excess of cuteness. He said he had seen signs even in last week's thumping of Sydney, and at training during the week. He acknowledged that a string of wins can be its own trap.
For Worsfold, this was the sort of victory that coaches love, replete with merit, yet still leaving nits to pick. The Eagles controlled the first half, but erratic kicking for goal left them still in Carlton's sights. Then they let the Blues back into the game. Four goals in quick succession narrowed the margin to a kick; an overrunning threatened."[3]
