West Coast were never really in the hunt against the finals-bound Hawthorn, failing to goal in the first quarter and ultimately falling by nearly 10 goals. Ashley Hansen played a lone hand up forward with four goals and Matt Priddis had a massive 45 possessions but had little impact on the game.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Eagles captain Darren Glass tormented Hawthorn star Lance Franklin to limit his impact but Roughead, who had never booted a goal in three previous games against West Coast, cut loose.

There were some good signs for the Eagles in the second quarter, particularly the four-goal effort from recalled key forward Ashley Hansen and the team spirit shown in a melee after Adam Hunter had flattened Franklin behind play.

Although Mark Nicoski appeared to punch Franklin in the stomach as the melee broke up. The midfield grunt from Sam Mitchell, Shane Crawford and Rick Ladson helped the Hawks to a 36-point lead at the main break."[1]

The Age[]

"Hawthorn's twin power forwards - Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin - had a big influence. Roughead kicked six goals and Franklin five. The Eagles used Darren Glass on Franklin, but were scrambling for another defensive tall to counter Roughead. Beau Wilkes, Jaymie Graham and Brent Staker all had a turn, none of them effectively.

Daniel Kerr was brilliant for the Eagles, with 40 possessions. That was shaded statistically by Matt Priddis with 45, but Kerr was the man who kept West Coast competitive.

Ashley Hansen was handy at centre half-forward, with four goals, but neither the delivery to him nor his output could match what was happening at the other end of the ground."[2]
