West Coast returned to the winners' list after two straight defeats with another come-from-behind victory, this time against Hawthorn in their first game at the MCG since the previous year's Grand Final. The Hawks led at every change but West Coast hit the front early in the final quarter and the two sides traded goals until the Eagles were finally able to put the game to bed deep in time-on. Chris Judd was best for the Eagles with 33 possessions and 10 clearances, and Quinten Lynch dominated up forward with 12 marks and 5 goals.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"When the game was in the balance late in the third term, it was Cousins who got on the end of a Brent Staker handball to snap the goal that left the Eagles just six points adrift near three-quarter time.

And after several frustrating minutes at the start of the final term, it was Cousins who delivered the goal to win back the lead for only the second time in the match.

He would not have kicked too many better, either.

He emerged from a mad scramble to squeeze the ball through the goal from deep in the right forward pocket, with two defenders lunging to make the tackle."
