From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The Hawks were unable to make enough of the early dominance sparked by their midfielders, Ben Allan, Andrew Gowers, John Platten and Darren Jarman. They paid for it when the momentum changed late in the second term, and West Coast quickly grabbed the advantage.
Crucially, Malthouse swung Chris Waterman on to the wing, where Gowers had beaten Chris Mainwaring. Gowers was tamed, and Mainwaring, released to half-forward, became a fine player.
Hawthorn's confidence subsided, and it lacked a player like Brereton to reverse the trend. Its captain, Gary Ayres, had hobbled to a forward pocket with an injury, and Chris Mew had lasted only five minutes in his comeback game before hurting his back.
Fifteen minutes into the final term, with the game still in the balance, Allan ran out of defence and chipped a pass over the head of his target into the waiting hands of Eagle David Hart at centre half-forward. Hart kicked accurately to seal the game."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"West Coast grabbed the lead midway through the third quarter when it was kicking into the breeze and finished off with three goals to one in a courageous final quarter.
Star full-forward Peter Sumich bagged five goals for the victors and was fed brilliantly by classy mid-fielders Dean Kemp (27 possessions), Chris Mainwaring (29) and Craig Turley (27).
West Coast defender David Hart, playing his first game back from injury, came off the bench half-way through the second quarter and dominated at half back, collecting 20 touches.
Playing in his premier division debut, Matthew Clape, a 23-year old from East Perth, booted the Eagles' only goal in the first quarter with his first kick in AFL football and continued to perform creditably throughout the game."[2]
