From the papers[]
The Sunday Age[]
"If the second quarter was good, the third quarter was special for Carlton. One sensed the Eagles would not lie down. There was no panic, they made no radical change, but they lifted a notch.
It was here that the Blues learned how to fight. They did not kick a goal for the term; in fact, only Kernahan looked like troubling the scorers. Simon Verbeek, Adrian Bassett, Michael Sexton, all with little experience, teamed with campaigners Dean, Hanna and Tom Alvin to restrict the Eagles to one goal, four points. It meant they had maintained a valuable 17-point lead going into the final quarter.
The Eagles had no real stars, with the exception of Craig Turley, but they fought back with skill and courage. Heady, Kemp, Peter Matera and Chris Mainwaring had been down, as had Sumich, but they all came back hard. Kemp and Matera kicked two quick goals and when Turley put the visitors in front at the 12-minute mark, it looked as though they would escape."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The third quarter was a torrid battle in which either team could have wrapped up the game had they converted their chances.
Only one goal was scored in the quarter as the Eagles clawed their way closer and trailed by 17 points at the final break.
Throughout the match the Carlton centre square players easily out-played their opponents but in the final quarter the visitors moved more freely from the centre and within three minutes had reduced the margin to five points."[2]
