From the papers[]
The Age[]
"But, after putting up a creditable struggle, the Eagles again showed they simply do not have the knowledge or strength to win in Melbourne.
Essendon, on the other hand, has a couple of players with sufficient memories to now what winning is all about and, thanks to those few, moved back into the final five with a 27-point victory.
The names of the players who saved Essendong were as predictable as the result itself. Tim Watson, Terry Daniher and Simon Madden were all consistent contributors for the Bombers, but more importantly, they steadied their side when things became tight in the vital final term.
Apart from a 10-minute period in the third term, West Coast led for most of the day, and had a six-point advantage at three-quarter time. That was lost by seven minutes into the final stanza as Essendon drew away like a team that always had the game under control - a misleading impression if ever there was one."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Madden, playing a dual role of ruckman and centre half forward, dominated the game underlining his status as the number one big man in Australian football.
Skipper Daniher was also an excellent contributor along with ruck rover Tim Watson, who many consider was unlucky not to be named in the original Victorian training squad.
The Eagles led for most of the day but lacked a tall forward capable of converting opportunities."[2]
