From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The Eagles' problems seem to be as much psychological and physical. On Saturday they seemed bogged in the mud, unable to cope with the heavy conditions.
Richmond, despite its brittle nature this season, was at least able to handle the conditions. The Tigers broke away early and sewed up the match with a five-goals to nil burst in the second term.
The Tigers' ascendancy was engineered by running players Michael Thomson, Maurice Rioli and young rover Allan McKellar, who brought an element of cohesion to the match. Richmond, with Peter Wilson starting to control the half-forward line, was at last able to string a couple of passes together.
The Eagles, shocked by this Richmond burst, seemed unable to keep up with their opponents. The Sandgropers had trained all week for the MCG mud but, faced with the real thing, were unable to master it."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The Tigers opened up a 33-point lead over West Coast halfway through the second quarter and that gap proved too much for the Eagles.
In 15 minutes of brilliant football in terrible conditions Richmond booted five goals, with Peter Wilson, Michael Mitchell (both from WA), Dale Weightman and Michael Thomson wreaking havoc.
After half time the Eagles outplayed Richmond, booting 6.8 to the Tigers' 3.7."[2]
