West Coast returned to the winners' list with a hard-fought win over the highly-ranked Cats, opening up a comfortable lead by halftime and withstanding a late Geelong fightback that saw the margin reduced to 12 points during the final quarter. Luke Shuey recorded 32 possessions and eight clearances, while Andrew Gaff also picked up 32 touches and kicked a crucial final-term goal.

From the coach[]
"I think we brought the pressure we were hoping to bring. It was obviously a fair bit of improvement from the previous game. We were working really hard over the break trying to work on those areas of the game and inside 50s, time in forward half, tackles in forward half, pressure. All of those sorts of things we've been working really hard on. If anything, we stripped it back a little bit against a team that's one of the best at that. I thought we held our own. The tackle count was up and it felt like it was the collective as well.
"...We're all in this together. The players have been a little bit disappointing here and there over the course of the year, but as we're all saying it's never as good or as bad as it seems. The last three weeks, to lose the last three games and then to come out and perform well tonight was probably what we expect.
"...It's not necessarily that I needed to see [aggression]. It's just where we're going, what do we stand for, what king of footy do you want to play and exposing our kids that come into the side. I thought Tom Cole - it was his third game tonight - Duggan, Barrass and those guys, Nelson who unfortunately hurt his hamstring, they stood up in their own way at certain occasions."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Jack Darling booted two goals and delivered an aggressive performance in a defiant statement to his critics as maligned wingman Lewis Jetta vied for best-afield honours in his third strong AFL performance since being recalled.
Darling went goalless in the absence of spearhead Josh Kennedy in West Coast’s demoralising loss to Gold Coast before their mid-season bye – a performance that came just 24 hours after becoming a father for the first time.
But the key forward threw his body around willingly in the opening term last night to set the scene for the Eagles before kicking a clutch goal from a strong mark with Geelong surging midway through the final quarter.
The Cats lost Scott Selwood and Nakia Cockatoo to suspected hamstring injuries as they were restricted to their lowest first half score in three years."[1]
The Age[]
"The goals kept coming for the Cats, but they couldn't stop the Eagles from hitting the scoreboard.
Without Kennedy, West Coast managed 28 scoring shots, although their inaccuracies early in the game did put them under some pressure late in the game. They kicked 11.17, including 1.8 from stoppages.
The win could have been much more impressive.
Lewis Jetta put on a kicking clinic to provide opportunity to his forwards and if Jack Darling and Drew Petrie had have received the returns they deserved for their efforts, they would have won by a lot more."[2]
PerthNow[]
"THE value of key forwards in modern day footy might be being questioned, but there’s no question suspended Tom Hawkins would have been handy.
With two of the game’s premier key forwards on the sidelines, it was West Coast without Josh Kennedy who prevailed over Geelong minus Hawkins.
Hawkins, who has kicked 30 goals, is the only tall forward at the Cats who was in double figures leading into the match.
Kennedy might have claimed the last two Coleman medals, but the Eagles found plenty of other tall targets as Jeremy McGovern, who was swung forward, combined with Jack Darling and veteran Drew Petrie in their 13-point victory."[3]
East Perth report[]
Round 13 (17 June)
East Perth started brightly against Leederville co-tenants Subiaco, but a goalless third term saw the Lions take control of the match and run away to a 32-point win. Chris Masten had 28 possessions and Josh Hill kicked two goals from limited opportunities.
Appearing for East Perth: Butler, Giles, Gorter, Hill, Karpany, Lamb, Lycett, Masten, McInnes, Mutimer, Partington, Redden, Rotham, Snadden, Wellingham. Reserves: Bayok, Watson.
