West Coast bounced back from two straight losses to record a routine but uninspiring win over the struggling Lions. The visitors were lucky to hold a one-point lead at the first break but piled on seven goals to one in the second quarter to break the game open, pushing the lead out to 69 points in the final term before some late Brisbane goals reduced the final margin below 50. Former Lion Elliot Yeo added 11 tackles and a goal to his 21 possessions and Mark LeCras hit the scoreboard early and finished with four goals.

From the coach[]

"We're pleased to get a win. It was probably not a polished performance, in the last ten minutes the boys looked tired, in particular some of the guys we brought in. It's been a big block of games and we'll enjoy the time off.

"We respect Brisbane. They've taken Sydney to the line, were within striking distance of Hawthorn here and North Melbourne at three-quarter time. Every game is hard, and to travel here and have a good performance, albeit the last ten minutes was disappointing and probably just shows us we've got a bit more work to do to play that four quarters, but not surprised at all that it was pretty combative in that first quarter. We're pleased to get through the game and hopefully no injuries.

"...We had to do a few different things with our midfield and our stoppages in the balance, but I think we kicked 11 goals from stoppages which is really pleasing, but I would have liked to have got more clearances. Daniel Rich was really getting away from us too in that first quarter around the ball, and I was really happy with Hutch's job after quarter time to shut him down. That's something we'll have to explore going forward as well."

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The Lions were one man down after losing Ryan Harwood to a knee injury and never seriously challenged after half-time.

Eagles forward Jamie Cripps was busy in attack but should have kicked more than two goals from a raft of scoring chances.

Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass were solid in key defensive posts, though Barrass, who was picked ahead of fit-again experienced teammate Eric Mackenzie, made some costly errors by foot.

High-profile off-season recruit Lewis Jetta (15 disposals) faces another fight to keep his spot in the side after a lacklustre display on the wing and across half-forward."[1]

The Age[]

"Josh Kennedy kicked five for the Eagles, and Mark LeCras was arguably best afield with four in an otherwise even team performance. Jack Darling kicked four, three of them in the last quarter, in a late cameo. Jamie Cripps by contrast had a big impact when the game was there to be won from just 14 disposals.

Several Lions had twice that many without being remotely as effective, with due respect to Mitch Robinson, who kept Matt Priddis to 16 touches while having 38 himself. Tom Rockliff had 38 touches, too, but he is a superstar in fantasy leagues only.

Things hadn't started well for the home side: in the eighth minute, Cripps strolled into goal, sizing up his options. He could have gone to Josh Hill close to goal, given off to Lewis Jetta by his side, or centred the ball to LeCras. He sensibly chose the last option."[2]

Courier Mail[]

"The easy nature of the goals in the second term was just as concerning as the number of goals as the visitors dominated the Lions when the game was in the balance.

West Coast only led by a solitary point at quarter-time after a gritty opening term but it was one-way traffic after the first change with West Coast finding a glut of time and space to put the home side to the sword.

Kennedy kicked three goals in the second term with LeCras, Jamie Cripps, Chris Masten and Josh Hill joining the party for the Eagles.

The only sign of any resistance from Brisbane came from vice-captain Pearce Hanley who booted the Lions’ only goal for the term that was at odds with the first quarter effort."[3]

East Perth report[]

Round 13 (18 June)

East Perth were challenged by Perth but pulled away in the last term to record a comfortable 36-point win. Scott Lycett responded to his demotion with a big effort, recording 26 possessions, 27 hitouts and a goal, and veteran Xavier Ellis had a team-high 29 disposals.

Appearing for East Perth: Adamson, Brophy, Brown, Cole, Colledge, Ellis, Karpany, Lamb, Lucas, Lycett, MacKenzie (*first Royals appearance), McGinnity, Mutimer, Nelson, Tunbridge.
