West Coast rode some strong form from stand-in captain Josh Kennedy to lead by 39 points during the third quarter, then had to withstand a tremendous fightback by the young Suns who surged back to take the lead late in the final term. A dribbled goal by third-gamer Jeremy McGovern, his third of the day, wrested back the lead and was enough for West Coast to pinch the points. Kennedy had 7 goals and Nic Naitanui dominated with 22 possessions, 34 hitouts and 6 clearances in his 100th game as the Eagles farewelled retired skipper Darren Glass.

"Two goals to Brandon Matera were cancelled out by two to stand-in Eagles skipper Kennedy and with another two home goals coming directly from defensive turnovers, the Suns had a few early issues.

Fuelled also by a brilliant quarter from 100-gamer Naitanui, the Eagles went into the first break with a six-point lead and a 14-8 advantage in clearances.

Kennedy’s hot streak in the first quarter continued in the second and within 15 minutes he had taken his goal tally to five and extended the Eagles’ lead to 27 points.

The Suns had been completely outgunned in the midfield battle, but finally began to found some rhythm in the minutes leading up to half-time."
