West Coast rode some strong form from stand-in captain Josh Kennedy to lead by 39 points during the third quarter, then had to withstand a tremendous fightback by the young Suns who surged back to take the lead late in the final term. A dribbled goal by third-gamer Jeremy McGovern, his third of the day, wrested back the lead and was enough for West Coast to pinch the points. Kennedy had 7 goals and Nic Naitanui dominated with 22 possessions, 34 hitouts and 6 clearances in his 100th game as the Eagles farewelled retired skipper Darren Glass.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Two goals to Brandon Matera were cancelled out by two to stand-in Eagles skipper Kennedy and with another two home goals coming directly from defensive turnovers, the Suns had a few early issues.

Fuelled also by a brilliant quarter from 100-gamer Naitanui, the Eagles went into the first break with a six-point lead and a 14-8 advantage in clearances.

Kennedy’s hot streak in the first quarter continued in the second and within 15 minutes he had taken his goal tally to five and extended the Eagles’ lead to 27 points.

The Suns had been completely outgunned in the midfield battle, but finally began to found some rhythm in the minutes leading up to half-time."

The Age[]

"West Coast will rotate the captaincy over the remainder of the season in a bid to find a full-time replacement for Darren Glass who called quits on a 270-game career during the week.

On Saturday it was Kennedy’s chance and he didn’t waste it.

He kicked two goals in the opening term, three in the second and two in the third. His haul takes his season tally to 32 goals, just three behind the leaders in the race for the Coleman Medal, Port Adelaide’s Jay Schultz and Jack Riewoldt (each on 35).

Kennedy's performance early in the game shocked the Suns and looked to break the game open."

PerthNow[]

"When McGovern kicked his second at the 24-minute mark of the third, the Eagles looked to have done enough.

But the Suns summoned a monumental comeback effort, sparked by running goals to Harley Bennell and Jarrod Harbrow within the space of a minute early in the final stanza.

It was just the start of a thrilling run of six consecutive goals from Gold Coast, with Tom Lynch’s third major taking the lead by a point.

The Eagles could only manage a single goal in the last quarter, but McGovern’s third was enough."

East Perth report[]

The Royals easily accounted for South Fremantle, winning 21.17.143 to 12.10.82. Simon Tunbridge kicked 4 goals and Brant Colledge picked up 26 touches as the pair returned from injury.

Appearing for East Perth: Brennan, Carter, Colledge, Hill, Maginness, McInnes, Sheed, Sinclair, Smith, Tunbridge, Wilson. Reserves: Barrass, Main, Powell
