The Eagles bounced back from a couple of losses to knock off Adelaide at home in a dour, defensive affair. Daniel Kerr again stood up in the absence of Chris Judd, benefiting from good service from Dean Cox in the ruck, while former Roo Chad Jones kicked three goals in a promising West Coast debut.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"While Jason Torney, Nathan Van Berlo and Brent Reilly gave the Crows some good early drive, the introduction of David Wirrpanda and Matt Priddis off the bench added immediate direction and helped turnaround Adelaide's early eight-point lead.

Two goals to Embley and Fletcher in the first three minutes of the second term put the Eagles in front and they held on to a seven-point advantage to the main break as fierce tackling from both teams closed the game down.

Seaby suggested recently that he wanted to be more of a threat close to goal and he rewarded coach John Worsfold's decision to station him deep in attack with two first-half goals.

But Chad Jones, brother of defender Brett, who was given an Eagles lifeline after a failed start at the Kangaroos, added fresh spice to the tall forward rotation. His two first-half goals could easily have been four had he not hit the post twice."[1]

The Age[]

"West Coast has been under pressure, losing four of its past six matches, and to venture to AAMI Stadium, where wins have been few and far between over the years, was an outstanding performance. The Eagles were far superior than the margin may suggest.

There were moments when the Eagles also had no luck, like hitting the post in three consecutive attempts in the third quarter, but there were also gems when they created goals through sheer class, a la Mark LeCras. When twice under pressure, he pierced the ball through the slightest of gaps early in the third term when the game lay precariously in the balance.

There were the regular features of an Eagles win, like Dean Cox dominating in ruck, Chad Fletcher having a huge impact and for most part beating his three main opponents in Tyson Edwards, Brent Reilly and Thompson, and Daniel Kerr having a "million" kicks - he finished with 32 disposals. But it was the overall defensive action that generated this win.

The Eagles simply worked hard, and while Adelaide, too, deserves credit for its defensive mode, especially considering Nathan Bassett (ankle) was forced off early in the second quarter, the blatant difference was that the Eagles also could take what they dished out."[2]
