West Coast scored an away win over the second-placed Demons and as a result pulled three games clear at the top of the ladder. Melbourne got the margin back within 14 points late in the final term to threaten to steal the win, but the Eagles steadied through Mark Nicoski and Andrew Embley to take the points. Embley was the standout with 35 touches and 3 goals, and Daniel Kerr had 29 touches and 9 clearances.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Embley told the world the team was "hungry" on Friday and he played like he'd never been fed on Saturday.

He ran Brock McLean ragged early, teaching the youngster a lesson he wont soon forget and finished with 35 possessions and three goals.

Up forward Phil Matera's six goals spoke for themselves but the Eagles got only medium returns from Quinten Lynch and Ashley Hansen. Judd was quiet by his lofty standards.

Daniel Chick again led the defence, this week taking out Monday's man Adem Yze. Brett Jones had his hands full with Russell Robertson but emerged with reputation attack given the amount of traffic that went through Robertson."[1]

The Sunday Age[]

"Up forward, Phil Matera had four goals to quarter-time, finished with six, and as far as Demon folk were concerned, was useful only in providing a contest for most-hated man on the ground. If Darren Goldspink had been umpiring elsewhere this weekend, Matera would have won that battle as easily as he dispensed with Matthew Whelan.

On the ball, where much of what has made these teams so watchable this season has been hatched, the Eagles were so spoilt for choice that Cousins and Fletcher could start the game in the forward line, and only come to the coalface when the fire needed stoking. Despite the 15-point margin, the Eagles were rarely challenged, and in this there could be no underestimation of Cox's role.

The hit-outs went 49-17 in West Coast's favour, a belting that Jeff White will not wish to dwell on. The effect on the Demons of his awful day was compounded by Cox returning to the fray every time Paul Johnson relieved White, a ploy that bordered on victimisation and almost inevitably resulted in another Eagles goal."Peter Hanlon, The Age (19 June 2005), "Gifted Eagles keep"[2]
