West Coast got the edge on a determined Kangaroos outfit in driving rain to maintain a top-two spot. In an old-fashioned wet-weather slog, the seasoned bodies of Ben Cousins and Daniel Chick proved invaluable as they took the ascendancy in the midfield, but it took a bit of magic from Ashley Sampi who kicked a clever and vital goal late to seal the win. Cousins had 23 possessions and Chick had 21 with 8 tackles.

From the paper[]

The Age[]

"Two-and-a-half minutes from the final siren, Sav Rocca took aim at goal from 40 metres on a tough angle.

It was a 50-50 shot on a dry day and long odds yesterday. But it was a shot he had to take because the odds of identifying a teammate free in a better scoring position than Rocca, kicking the wet and waterlogged ball to him and then having that player kick truly were even longer.

Rocca, one of the best kicks in the Kangaroos team, rightly took the responsibility and the shot at goal and missed. Two minutes later, at the other end, gifted Eagles small forward Ashley Sampi swooped on a loose ball at half-forward, sprinted free, ran onto his left foot and from 48 metres slotted home the goal.

Viewed in isolation it was a great goal. Viewed in conjunction with the slipping, sliding, fumbling, tackling and smothering mudfest that was going on all round it, this goal was a fraction short of a miracle."[2]
