West Coast finally snapped an eight-game losing streak with a tight win over the Demons on a drizzly day. The Eagles held a slender lead at the final change but kicked the first four goals of the last term to put some space between the two sides, then held on as Melbourne narrowed the margin in the closing stages. Ben Cousins continued his great form with 38 possessions and Phil Matera kicked five goals, but it wasn't all good news as Chad Morrison was added to the list of players requiring a knee reconstruction.

From the papers[]
Sydney Morning Herald[]
"Led by outstanding captain Ben Cousins, who gathered 38 possessions in a best-on-ground display, the Eagles overcame a six-point quarter-time deficit to lead at every change on the way to a 15.5 (95) to 13.10 (88) victory.
Phillip Matera, Glen Jakovich, Michael Gardiner and David Wirrpunda were all outstanding also, as the Eagles claimed their third win of the year. Rugged utility Andrew Embley put in his best performance to date with four goals, and Chad Fletcher returned to his early season form by restricting Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin to just 10 touches while gathering 25 of his own.
The duty of kicking a winning score fell on the slight shoulders of Matera, who completed his return to the blistering form of last season with five goals, his best bag of the year."[1]
