From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"In the last quarter it was Essendon's lack of discipline as opposed to the Eagles' quality that cost the Bombers the game.

Essendon sneaked inside 50 only five times to the Eagles' 20 and shot only three times to West Coast's 14. Not counting Hird, Essendon had 16 players who managed two kicks or fewer in the last quarter, the strong-starting Hardwick, Calthorpe, Lloyd, Lucas and Mercuri included.

Conversely the Eagles had players full of running.

Matera, who finished with seven goals, and Cousins, who had 10 possessions for the quarter, provided the last-term inspiration. Andrew Donnelly came from the bench and earned 12 touches and the chance to wrap up the game, which he wasted by kicking four behinds."[1]
