West Coast kept touch with the top five with a comprehensive victory over Fitzroy under lights at the WACA. The Eagles held the visitors to a solitary goal across the second and third terms in their best defensive effort of the season to date. Chris Mainwaring kicked two gols from a team-high 32 possessions and skipper Ross Glendinning bounced back from a quiet game with 10 marks and three majors.

The Age[]
"The wet, muddy centre and at times heavy rain might have been expected to help Fitzroy, but the West Coast players led to the ball, threw themselves on to it with the sort of determination expected of VFL players in the depth of a Melbourne winter and emerged from the game with more mud, as well as glory.
West Coast pulled clear of Fitzroy with a five-goal second quarter and added nine in the second half, six of those in the last quarter. Fitzroy, with leading goalkicker Doug Barwick well held and Richard Osborne, its other focus in attack, playing most of the match on the backline, broke down in attack.
When Fitzroy did push forward, it was usually to see the ball rebounded out of the West Coast half-back line through the running skills of Mark Zanotti, Geoff Miles and, playing in defence, the skillful Chris Lewis.
Michael O'Connell and Andrew Lockyer - better known until now as backmen - each scored three goals in the first half. Then, in the second, Ross Glendinning and Andrew MacNish got three each."[1]
