From the coach[]

"We’ll take the win and we move on. I thought Hawthorn played with plenty of spirit and at times really troubled us with their field position. But overall I probably thought we had more bang for buck when we went forward. Some of our talent shone through as well with Nic (Naitanui) having another reasonably good game. Our forward looked really dangerous and our backs held us up pretty well for the most part, although I reckon we conceded some fairly basic goals, but that’s taking a bit away from Hawthorn’s (game); they played with real spirit.

"...We needed them (Barrass and McGovern) today. The field position issue in the first half was really concerning. We couldn’t get it out of our back half and I think Hawthorn are the best in the competition at defending deep entries. (A) conceding those deep entries, and (B) not being able to get out of our back half was a real concern, but the ability to manage the scoreboard and I think not only those two but the other yong defenders coming through stood up when they needed to.

"...The ability of our players to go to another level, we need that. We need to start with it and finish with it, but I’m not sure we can get to that level all the time. That’s our expectation and our desire. The identity of our side is pretty solid. It’s taken us a while to get to where we want to be, but our work’s not done. I don’t think we had a perfect game today. I think Hawthorn played with plenty of spirit and defended pretty well. Perhaps we took our opportunities more than they did."[2]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The returning Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass formed a terrific combination in defence, taking six contested marks between them, while at the other end Liam Ryan was electric.

Ryan soared to take three huge pack marks, each time getting his hands the highest despite being the smallest man in the pack. Importantly, he finished each speccy off with a goal, while Josh Kennedy matched his contribution with three of his own.

McGovern and Barrass repelled everything in the opening term to hold the Hawks scoreless, despite the visitors’ edge in forward entries.

The Eagles had kicked the first four goals of the game before Liam Shiels found Hawthorn’s first six minutes into the second term."[3]

The Age[]

"While Josh Kennedy continued his goalkicking streak and run towards the Coleman Medal, it was Liam Ryan who got the crowd to its feet – three times.

The exciting small forward kicked three goals, all resulting from big pack marks that will make all highlight reels.

The return ended a bit of a drought for Ryan who has not kicked multiple goals in a game since Round 3 against Brisbane, after having only three possessions against Carlton a week earlier.

Kennedy was against reliable in attack, also kicking three goals."[4]

Reserves[]

West Coast's reserves played Hawthorn's squad members at Lathlain, although with very few Eagles available a number of Hawks players (including Keegan Brooksby) filled in for the home side. Ruckman Nathan Vardy suffered a severe cork while Tom Hickey and Anthony Treacy also appeared to leave the ground injured.

Appearing for West Coast: Edwards, Foley, Hickey, Jamieson, Jetta, X.O'Neill, Treacy, Vardy, Williams.
