West Coast suffered a rare loss at Subiaco after a horror final-quarter fadeout. Despite losing defenders Eric MacKenzie and Sam Butler before the game (with Butler withdrawing just seconds before the bounce), the Eagles led at every change but were swamped by the Crows in the final term, with the home side being held scoreless for the first time ever at Subiaco and ultimately going down by 29 points. Matt Priddis fought hard with 29 possessions and 12 tackles, and Jeremy McGovern toiled in defence with 6 marks and 16 touches.

From the coach[]

"We were surprised. We were disappointing in the last quarter to say the least. I didn’t really see it coming. I knew it was a tough game but I thought we were up for the fight. One thing that I can say about our players is that for the most part they fight it out. To be two goals up at three-quarter time...I think we had three inside 50s in the last quarter. The stats will just blow you away. There were some small signs at the back of the third quarter, but that game was sort of doing that a little bit. It was a bit of a tough game. That last quarter, I didn’t see it coming. It was really disappointing.

"We’ve really got to look at it in detail to get to the bottom of it. It looked like, and I’m sure you guys would have seen it tonight, we just weren’t up for the fight. We just rolled over. There was too much to too few. A lot of it was rebound 50s, which is hard, at this ground in particular, to generate your play from the goal line at the other end. I don’t know what our kicking efficiency was in the last quarter; probably in the low 40 per cents range I would have thought.

"...I’m pretty pragmatic on it all. We need to work out…you know, I spoke to some players individually. I thought this game was going to be a really big test for us to see where we are at. And take away interstate form, your home form and all that sort of stuff, this was a good team, a really good team, on our home deck that we were there for three quarters and then in the last quarter we didn’t finish it off. You’ve got to give a lot of credit to Adelaide. They stuck it out. We started poorly. We lost Butler in the last 10 seconds before the bounce, but we responded and rebounded quite well. As the game went on, less and less contributors started to bob up."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Adelaide caught the Eagles on the hop from the opening bounce, with Betts dobbing the first goal of the game thanks to a great bounce in the goal square.

The Crows got out the back twice in the next two minutes to push their lead to 12 points, with Josh Jenkins kicking the ball out of the stadium with his goal from the square.

But after such a bright start, there was little else to like in the opening term for the visitors.

Buoyed by some stellar clearance work from Matt Priddis, the Eagles began to take hold of the midfield battle."[2]

The Age[]

"For most of the game, the Eagles were able to turn the ball over and go forward and score because of their attack on the football.

They were given a lesson by the Western Bulldogs in the last round, losing the contested football tally by 39 and losing the game by eight points.

But they were ferocious against the Crows from the outset.

They had 15 more than the Crows at quarter-time and led by 17 points had 11 more at the main break and led by 19.

The Crows may have picked up the intensity in the second quarter, but they wasted their chances in front of goal."[3]

The Advertiser[]

"Adelaide had enough of the ball early on but looked rushed and the forward line never really got going as Jeremy McGovern patrolled half-back with ease.

But in the second half they just seemed to click. As the pressure went up, Adelaide players stood tall.

The week’s rest did Scott Thompson good with the veteran onballer having 24 disposals, Rory Sloane did his usual inspiring stuff and there were the flashes of brilliance we’ve come to expect from Eddie Betts who kicked five goals.

His sidekick Charlie Cameron was just as good with his game featuring breathtaking pace, desperate tackling, one hanger in the third quarter and a big goal."[4]

East Perth report[]

There was a general WAFL bye as a representative side played (and thrashed) Tasmania.
