West Coast and Essendon put on an enthralling contest despite pouring rain, with the Bombers taking an early advantage before West Coast pulled back to take the lead going into halftime. The sides then swapped the lead during a tight second half before West Coast took control and ran out four-goal winners. From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Essendon earned their eight point lead at quarter time but it was a lead that had come at a cost.
They continued to hold sway for the first half of the second quarter, with a remarkable goal to ruckman David Hille and a goalsquare mark to Mark Johnson stretching the lead to 19 points. But when the match swung back towards the home team towards the end of the term it did so violently.
Judd and Cousins took control of the clearances and Kerr came surging into the game, fighting free of several Essendon tackles to deliver damaging possessions to teammates.
West Coast's best scrapper Chick went forward to give a vigorous contest in attack and the Eagles stormed back. Cousins got a 50m penalty from an over-zealous Adam McPhee to reduce the margin to 13 points and while Matthew Lloyd stretched the lead again with a freakish goalsquare soccer, the Bombers were now clearly on the back foot."[1]
Players in the WAFL[]
There was a general bye in the WAFL as a representative side took on Queensland at Carrara. Future Eagle Matt Priddis won the Simpson Medal as WA's best.
