West Coast gave the defending premiers a hiding on their home turf to move to second place on the ladder. The Eagles had the game sewn up by halftime thanks to an electric performance by young star Chris Judd, who kicked two goals in the first term and three in the second as the Lions had no answer to his explosive pace from stoppages. Judd was well assisted by skipper Ben Cousins with 35 disposals and a goal and fellow midfielder Chad Fletcher who kicked 3 goals from 29 possessions.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Ben Cousins (35 possessions) and Chad Fletcher (29) were the architects in traffic, while Judd finished off in attack with two first-quarter goals to give his side a healthy 25-point buffer, silencing the Gabba crowd of 31,185.

But it was a breathtaking five-minute patch in the second quarter that signalled an early end to this top-of-the-ladder showdown. Judd burst through, in front of and even from behind packs, to blast three brilliant goals.

At the main break, the 19-year-old - who remains undecided about whether to stick with the Eagles beyond this season - had five goals from seven kicks and, more importantly, his side was home and hosed leading by 48 points.

Judd might have gone without a goal in the second half, but Brisbane's defence was still exposed under the speed and weight of possession that was spewing forward. Justin Leppitsch and Chris Johnson were unable to provide their normal rebound drive."[2]
