From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The Hawks had the scores level at three-quarter-time and had every chance of causing an upset. Only a lack of legs in the midfield and a few wasted opportunities, early in the final term, denied them a win.

Malthouse has become used to winning by small margins, with the 15-point victory being the second-largest for the Eagles in the past five weeks.
...
Michael Gardiner was one who benefitted from his contest with veteran Paul Salmon. Having struggled in the early stages against a man who is 15 years his senior, he soon caught up with the pace of the game and helped the Eagles return from an 18-point deficit.

When West Coast threatened to pull away, taking as much as a three-goal lead on five occasions, Hawthorn fought back."[1]
