From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Eagles coach Mick Malthouse was furious after the match, as well he might have been. He praised his players for their valor, but it was their rash of mistakes under pressure that cost them a chance to draw, or to ease ahead.

But while the Eagles could say they mucked it up, or were down to 17 men, they rarely became that skill-tied in crunch matches over the past two seasons.

In fact, the only real ray of light was the return of Chris Mainwaring, who is considered to have completed his pre-season (missed through injury), and who ran down Wayne Schwass over a fair distance in the dying moments.[1]
