From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The Bears, chasing their first home win of the year, kicked four of the first six goals to lead by nine points after 20 minutes, but the visitors quickly extinguished the Brisbane enthusiasm and were untroubled to win 21.19 (145) to 14.9 (93).

Ironically, the Bears won in the two key positions of centre half-forward and centre half-back, through Roger Merrett and Martin Leslie, but that was the end of it. They did not have one other winner.

Majestic Bears centreman Michael McLean had his colours lowered for the first time this year by his best-afield Eagles counterpart, Dean Kemp, as the Eagles built a comprehensive victory on a platform of dominant midfield players.

Dean Irving controlled the knock-outs throughout, allowing the running brigade of Kemp, Craig Turley, Chris Lewis, Chris Mainwaring, Peter Matera and company to do as it liked."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Rookie teenagers Ryan Turnbull, Glen Jakovich and Ashley McIntosh assumed great responsibility to help keep the Eagles' unbeaten record intact and did so with aplomb.

The Eagles extended their winning streak to 11 games after leading at every change and posting a 21-19 (145) to 14-9 (93) victory.

The Eagles' success was built around their lightning fast midfielders who left the Bears floundering in their wake."[2]
