West Coast's poor run in Victoria continued when they fell to the Cats in a tight encounter at Kardinia Park. The Eagles fought back when it looked like Geelong had the win sewn up midway through the final term, but could not quite bridge the gap. Wally Matera kicked three goals from 20 touches and the giant Alex Ishchenko has 12 marks and 12 hitouts.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Goals to Gavin Exell, Gary Ablett (two) and a loping Paul Couch from 25 metres put the Cats 26 points up and the crowd, which had sensed victory from the outset but had dared not contemplate the end result, in a happier frame of mind.

But the Cats' killer instinct suddenly turned suicidal as they did all they could to play the perfect hopes and hand their visitors the premiership points on a platter.

In the ensuing 12 minutes, the Eagles' Andrew Lockyer, selected at full-back but spending most of the day at full-forward, goaled after a strong mark, Ross Glendinning snapped another on the run from 50 metres and Phil Narkle kicked a third from a pocket to trim Geelong's four-goal break to just seven points.

The Eagles had suddenly stopped fiddling and were playing the sort of direct style of football that Geelong had managed to employ for only 10 or so minutes of each quarter."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Eagles captain Ross Glendinning began at centre half-forward, but contributed little and was eventually moved to full forward.

He had only two or three possessions throughout the second and third quarters, when the game was extremely tight. Afterwards he had several stitches for a leg wound.

Geelong alternated Bruce Lindner and Gary Ablett at full forward and they were the Cats' only two goal kickers up to half time.

Geelong looked capable of breaking away from the Eagles in the third quarter, but West Coast small men Phil Narkle, Wally Matera and David Hart kept them in the game."[2]
