West Coast trailed at every stage but stormed home to pip St Kilda at the post, with the game winning goal coming from an extremely unlikely source in Eric MacKenzie. MacKenzie had a good day out, kicking two goals (after just one goal in his previous 87 games) and keeping Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt quiet, and Scott Selwood had 33 possessions.

From the coach[]

"We're not happy with the way we played tonight or anything like that but we've got four points and they're locked away. That's the key thing for us right at this moment. Yeah, we'd like to be playing better footy and have more players out there, but we've got that to work towards. That's what we've got to do. Do the hard work now going forward. Today, at the end of the game ... really it comes down to a bit of luck about who is in front when the final siren goes. Both teams obviously never gave up. Both teams went at it and both teams had chances to hold onto the lead. It was us in the end. We'll take that because we've had a couple of games this year where we think for other reasons we've cost ourselves the chance to have those four points.

"..Tonight I thought the intensity was good. The skill level and some of the decision making can be a lot better. But they worked pretty hard tonight coming off a six-day break."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"West Coast had looked their best when methodically working the ball around the ground.

They denied St Kilda possession by gradually moving it forward and then setting up a marking target inside 50.

That approach prevented the helter skelter type of play that had set up the Saints' early goals.

St Kilda's lead meant West Coast had to throw caution to the wind after hanging in all night. The Eagles trailed by 13 points at three-quarter time but then Dean Cox and Priddis stood tall."[2]

The Age[]

"St Kilda will think it deserved better. It began the night as if starting the season again. Its aim was to make the game fast and frenetic. If not kick or handball, a tap would do, to keep the ball moving. At first, West Coast was taken aback. St Kilda kicked the first four goals, starting with a brace from the latterly little seen Stephen Milne, who relished this open contest and was again his flying beetle self of old. If the Saints could not advance the clock instantly, at least they could turn it back.

But in the AFL, not many stolen marches last. West Coast stationed Shannon Hurn behind the ball, and immediately the game tightened. St Kilda had alacrity, but the Eagles had height, and soon enough made up three goals."[3]

Herald-Sun[]

"West Coast had lost the first three quarters to the spirited Saints, but with Dean Cox and Matt Priddis standing up, the Eagles finally hit the front late in the final term.

The Saints hit back to regain the lead, but Leigh Montagna, Beau Maister and Rhys Stanley all missed gilt-edged chance to give the Saints what would have been a match-winning lead late in the last term.

On the final point, as St Kilda went two in front, Shannon Hurn went long from the kick-in and the ball spilled over the back to Matt Rosa who pumped the ball forward to the least likely of heroes.

Regular defender Eric MacKenzie, who'd earlier kicked just the second goal of his career, couldn't believe his luck as he sprinted back one-out against Maister, who fell over and gifted the match-winner to the Eagles."[4]
