West Coast looked to have the game sewed up in the second quarter when they led by as much as six goals, before a James Hird-led revival saw the Bombers hit the front in the final quarter and hold on for their second one-point win in as many games. Matt Rosa was West Coast's best with 32 possessions and a goal, while Shannon Hurn earned a Rising Star nomination with 19 touches and a goal.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Put simply, the speed of the Eagles between the two 50m arcs was scintillating, startling and sublime and their running game looked to be in another league as it has many times in the past three seasons.

By quarter time the Eagles had registered 10 scoring shots to one for a 29-point lead.

The Bombers cut their deficit back to just 17 points as coach Kevin Sheedy desperately looked for ways to dry up the Eagles' paralysing run through the midfield from Chris Judd, Matt Rosa, Matthew Priddis and Tyson Stenglein.

But although the two teams kicked five goals each for the second quarter, Essendon's hopes had been dealt a severe blow by that early explosion."[1]

The Age[]

"Down by as much as 36 points in the first half and by 30 at half-time, the deadly accurate Dons added 9.3 to 4.2 in the second half.

David Hille put the Dons ahead when he kicked a point from a set shot 45 metres out. There was almost two minutes to play and everything to play for. James Hird got a quick kick away from one pack to repel a West Coast attack, then Dustin Fletcher spoiled a high ball to snuff out another, the ball going just the right side of the behind post (for Essendon) as it went out of play.

There was only three seconds left on the clock and the "hang time" from the throw in virtually cancelled that out. No sooner had the hitout been contested than the final siren sounded."[2]
