West Coast and the Bulldogs played out the first-ever draw at Subiaco with Ashley Sampi slotting a goal after the siren to level the scores. In a see-sawing match, West Coast led by 30 points midway through the second quarter but the Bulldogs took control in the third with seven goals. The Eagles fought back to level the scores before two Western Bulldogs goals put the visitors 13 points up deep in time on. West Coast cut the margin through Chad Fletcher before Sampi marked the ball deep inside 50 just before the siren and calmly put through his third to salvage two premiership points. Ben Cousins worked tirelessly for 28 possessions and Phil Matera stepped up in the last quarter with three goals to take him to five for the match.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"West Coast will ponder long and hard about a lop-sided free kick count (15-4) against them but in truth it was a legacy of a level of enterprise and endeavour clearly inferior to their opponents for much of the match.

With 14 seconds remaining, 19-year-old Ashley Sampi marked virtually uncontested 15 metres out to kick the goal which tied the scores.

His mark had come from a kick from Andrew Embley, also the result of a barely contested mark, which, in turn, came from a flurry of handballs and a pressured kick after a botched attempt to play on from the back pocket by defender Matthew Robbins with under a minute to play.

In a nutshell, it was an escape for the Eagles who had dozed off mid-match, and a botched shot at glory for the Bulldogs who had re-written the plot only to lose it in the last minute."[2]
