Richmond justified their top-of-the-ladder standing by thrashing the reigning premiers by ten goals. The Tigers dominated the game from start to finish, with plenty of high-profile Eagles well below their best. Jason Ball with 11 marks and four goals and Dean Kemp with 32 possessions were two that could hold their heads high.

"In a perverse way, two late goals to the Eagles can be points of praise for Richmond. The first, to Brett Heady, came after a collision on the back flank left the Tigers two players short.

Jamie Tape had run with the flight of the ball into oncoming opponents, colliding head-on with hard-at-the-Sherrin Mark Neeld. Two on the ground, a rising Tape pointing worriedly at an unconscious Neeld.

Two minutes later, Heady shrugged off a weary Duncan Kellaway in the square to goal again. The Heady who had been frustrated by and second to the ball behind a magnificent (Northey's word) Kellaway all day.

Alongside him, 19-year-old spindle David Bourke showed great composure (Northey's word again) to see off David Hynes and Tony Godden, and then quieten Jason Ball, who had given the Eagles a faint sniff in the third term."

"Richmond set up victory in the third quarter by going to a 44 point lead before it was reeled in to 33 at the last change.

West Coast did not look comfortable on the shifting Optus Oval surface, affected by a week of heavy rain.

Richmond won with tenacity and strength in the packs and the hard work of centreman Matthew Knights, wingman Wayne Campbell and some solid defensive work from Duncan Kellaway.

West Coast showed only a shadow of its best form and only Jason Ball, with three goals, bad any real effect in attack."
