From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Footscray had let a grand start slip and West Coast had bullied its way back into the match with five goals in 15 minutes. The young Footscray side was beginning to lose its composure, and the sure handling and confidence was starting to make way for elementary errors which the West Australians were all too happy to exploit.

Dean Laidley was often there to pick up the crumbs in defence and relieve the pressure, while captain Ross Glendinning was the effective target man in attack. Around the ground, rover Wally Matera was dominant, prompting Malthouse to comment afterwards that "it looked like there were about three guys with No.1 on their backs running around out there."

Then came Hawkins - and the Eagles' charge was halted. For the next hour a fantastic battle was waged as both sides tried to establish a winning break. But as one looked set to do so, the other came back, usually after a chain of handballs had cut through the opposition defence to set up an easy conversion."[1]
