Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) finally broke through for their first win of the Andrew McQualter era, holding off Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) in a high-scoring Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round clash. On an emotional day as the club marked the tragic death of premiership defender Adam Selwood, Waalitj ratcheted up the pressure on the visitors and had a handy 23-point lead late in the first half before a Saints goal narrowed the margin on the half-time siren. There were a few anxious moments in the last quarter, which turned into a shootout, as the Saints got the margin back within three goals but two crucial goals to Liam Ryan put the result beyond doubt. Brady Hough had a team-high 24 disposals and his first career goal, and Harley Reid had 15 touches and two goals.

Quarter by quarter[]

Both sides went in as named, with youngsters Tom Gross and Tobie Travaglia starting as subs. The match was played in fine and clear, but sombre, conditions, with a moment's silence to mark the tragic passing of Adam Selwood prior to the bounce and a video tribute at half-time.

From the coach[]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Ultimately, it was the team’s commitment to the cause for a full four quarters which ensured they’d belt out the team song for the first time in 281 days.

The game was on the Eagles’ terms early, with the home side peppering the Saints’ defence with the first eight entries inside 50.

Their defence held up well with the Eagles kicking the first two goals before the visitors went coast-to-coast to respond through Mason Wood (two goals).

Fittingly Jamie Cripps was the man who would calm his side, kicking an emotional goal as the only former teammate of the late Selwood on the ground."[1]

Reserves[]

The WAFL had a general bye as a representative side traveled to South Australia.
