West Coast's seemingly terminal decline hit new depths in Tasmania, suffering a record thrashing at the hands of the previously bottom-placed Hawthorn. The Eagles kicked the first goal but were non-competitive from that point on, with the 46-point margin at the long break concerning but still giving little indication of the damage to come. They managed just two points in the second half, with the Hawks pumping through 11 goals to take full advantage of their opponents' malaise. Dom Sheed managed two of his side's four goals, but the injury woes continued with Jamaine Jones and acting captain Liam Duggan the latest casualties.

Quarter by quarter[]

Both sides went in as named, after illness forced West Coast into changes in the lead-up. Greg Clark and Connor Macdonald started as subs. The game was played in fine conditions.

From the coach[]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Trying to stop the Hawks’ midfield dominance, West Coast pushed their forwards up to the contest, but it just left James Sicily (30 disposals and 11 marks) to be the spare man in defence and he fed on any mistake going forward.

As the game wore on the Hawks’ ability to spread increased and at times their overlap handball looked more like a training drill, with the Eagles’ pressure almost non-existent at times.

Unlike in previous weeks, the Eagles didn’t even respond even for at least a quarter and held goalless in the third term as Lewis ran rampant on Edwards, kicking all three of the home team’s majors.

The final quarter was all one-way traffic as even the Eagles’ little effort haltered as the Hawks."[1]

Reserves[]

There was a general WAFL bye as a representative side played South Australia.
