From the coach[]
"It was a really good win, hard fought. I'm not surprised at all about what hawthorn brought. But to sustain it, and look, it was a difficult and scrappy game at times, but to win it in that manner and to stand up when it counted, I'm really proud of our players.
"You can't just win on one part of your game. To suggest that we're just an uncontested kicking side is a little bit ... well, say what you want. But there's got to be a bit more to it than just that. Every week we confront different teams playing different ways, so how we play our way while trying to take away the opposition's strengths and all those types of things are there. But we're pretty predictable in the contest at the moment, which I thought there were moments today where we really needed to stand up and dig in and at the start of the last quarter I thought our leaders and Nic stood up for a small period there and really helped get ascendancy. There's so many parts of the game though, it's always changing.
"...It wasn't a high-scoring game. I think today the forwards worked well together to provide options, but both sides I thought really cracked in. Making the most of your opportunities against a really good defence and kicking some important goals at important times. In general we've got a structure we stick to and every week we're going to confront something different, but they're playing their roles."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Scores were level at halftime and the game was well and truly up for grabs in the fourth quarter as the Eagles went to the final break up by a goal.
In the end, it was the Eagles’ big names who stood tall when the game was on the line.
Nic Naitanui was the first to hit the scoreboard, soaring for a huge pack mark and calmly slotting his shot at goal.
Dual Coleman Medallist Josh Kennedy then earned a free kick and slotted his third major to extend the Eagles’ lead to a game-high 19 points."[1]
The Age[]
"For the second week running West Coast found themselves level with their opposition at half-time. Their forwards generally looked more dangerous than those in brown and gold, but they made too many elementary skill errors near goal against a side as disciplined as the Hawks to put Alastair Clarkson’s men away.
A couple of sublime finishes from Jarman Impey helped Hawthorn's cause, while Liam Shiels stepped up in the middle as Mitchell found himself restricted by a dedicated tag from Mark Hutchings.
Then in the third quarter, holes started appearing in Hawthorn’s game. Andrew Gaff, outstanding on the day, found space at a forward 50 stoppage and snapped truly. Mark LeCras was somehow left all alone and marked 35 metres out. Late inclusion Jonathon Ceglar and James Sicily spoiled each other in a marking contest on the wing. And David Mirra coughed the ball up as he kicked across goals at half-back."[2]
