2 Z.Williams (GWS)
1 D.Shiel (GWS)
West Coast lost a spirited arm-wrestle with the undermanned Giants to record their first defeat against the competition's newest side, and in the process lost spearhead Josh Kennedy to a leg injury in the final term. The lead changed hands eight times throughout the last quarter but GWS were able to pull away as Kennedy left the field. Lewis Jetta had his best game for the club with 28 possessions and two goals, and Jeremy McGovern took nine marks and blanketed opposition forward Jon Patton.

From the coach[]
"The intent and method was there for the most part. There was some poor execution at stages and a bit of class got us at stages as well. We are losing a lot of supply. Our field position at the moment - we are doing a lot of our rebounding from the back half. We lost the inside 50s by 13, the clearances by 20, so a lot of our scores are from the back half, so we need to get better. Obviously we don't have Nic, and we lost Luke before the game, but that is not an excuse. We need to get it done and we need to be better than that."
"...We tried a lot of things. You try and fix one problem and another one pops up when you play good sides, and I thought Hutch going to Shiel in the second half was a good opportunity for him to get the job done, but it opened up other avenues. The Giants responded pretty well when we did that and other players stood up for them in that period."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"The lead changed eight times during an epic final-quarter tussle, before Giants forward Toby Greene finally broke the game open.
Greene had endured a shocking day in front of goal over the first three quarters but he produced the goods when it mattered.
He nailed a long-range set shot to put his team up by nine points at the 24-minute mark of the last quarter.
And he saved his best for last, nailing a 50m running shot from the boundary to ice the Giants' first ever win over West Coast."
The Age[]
"In that first half, goals were difficult for GWS to find. They had 4.7 at the break and yet trailed by only seven points. They kicked 10.7 after the break, to the Eagles 8.4.
The Eagles were always going to come out firing after being embarrassed by Essendon at Etihad Stadium last weekend.
Their intent was questioned after the 61-point loss to Bombers where they fell way short of their opponent in contested football.
So it should not have surprised anyone that they led in that stat by 13 at quarter-time against the Giants."
PerthNow[]
"GWS were themselves missing a galaxy of stars after former No.1 draft pick Tom Scully pulled out before bouncedown.
But with Josh Kelly, Callan Ward and Dylan Shiel dominant around the ball, the visitors sliced through West Coast’s midfield to seal their eighth win of the year and remain in second spot.
Malcolm Karpany was a late inclusion for Shuey and played just his second AFL game in three-and-a-half seasons.
The half forward showed some much needed promise in booting his first AFL goal and setting up another for Jetta in a lively first quarter."
East Perth report[]
There was a general bye as a WAFL representative side (featuring ex-Eagles Andrew Strijk, Tony Notte and Corey Adamson) defeated the VFL's all-star side, the first time a WA team had won in Melbourne.
