West Coast were never in the contest against Carlton, with the Blues opening up a 50 point lead during the third quarter before the Eagles made some cosmetic improvements to the scoreboard with late goals. Mark LeCras impressed with 5 goals and Beau Waters was solid with 23 possessions and 10 marks.

From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Burly forward Quinten Lynch's poor excuse for a chase on Andrew Walker when the game was barely two minutes old sent a poor message from a premiership player. As a spin-off Will Schofield was nowhere near hard enough six minutes later when Lachlan Henderson bumped him meekly off a ground ball, took possession and hit up Setanta O'hAilpin, who goaled with his set shot.
And Scott Selwood's lack of concentration and desperation when he dropped an uncontested mark at half-back soon after continued the trend, which climaxed when 2006 Norm Smith medallist Andrew Embley was inexcusably brought down in a tackle by Jeff Garlett in front of goal as he strolled out of defence in the third term.
The fact that Carlton had gleaned 12 more contested possessions by quarter time unveiled a disturbing reality for West Coast in that they just were not hard enough on the day."[1]
The Age[]
"Carlton's difficulty was that for all its dominance of the play it did not punish as it might on the scoreboard.
No one forward seized the day - save for Garlett, whom Ratten considered to have had a nine out of 10 effort, but even he finished the match with only two goals.
Setanta O'hAilpin had moments when he threatened to get hold of a bag. Mitch Robinson hounded the ball out of Eagles hands and gave them an aggression around the ball to be admired, yet still they did not have that rain of goals that dominance across the field warranted."[2]
Herald-Sun[]
"With no Jarrad Waite, Paul Bower and Simon White the Eagles forwards loomed as the visitors' trump card.
But of Josh Kennedy, Mark LeCras, Quinten Lynch and Ben McKinley, only LeCras (five goals) and former Blue Kennedy (four) capitalised on limited opportunities.
Matt Priddis was goodand Embley had 24 touches, but little influence.
In the ruck, Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui won the hitouts against Kreuzer and Sam Jacobs."[3]
