West Coast trailed by 41 points at halftime after a disastrous second quarter, before some Mark LeCras magic got them back within reach of Carlton. The goalsneak kicked four third-quarter goals, including a goal of the year contender, and finished with six goals but Carlton steadied in the final term to restore the 41 point margin. Aside from LeCras, Daniel Kerr was busy with 23 possessions and 9 clearances but was rubbed out for striking Blue Marc Murphy before the opening bounce, and Adam Hunter got on the scoreboard in his 150th game.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"After starting on the bench, Eagles debutant Tom Swift dashed on to the ground midway into the term, first picking up Murphy and then Stevens, who slipped from half-back to run through the middle.

Fevola brushed off talk of poor form with his opening salvo, a miraculous goal kicked from deep in the left forward pocket with the outside of his right boot, the ball curling and bouncing through and giving the Blues a three-goal lead.

LeCras, who had a huge impact after half-time, kept the Eagles in touch with his first goal before Adam Hunter in his 150th game narrowed the gap to 11 points.

Carlton dominated the second term, but both sides made costly mistakes by over-using the ball and failing to hit targets going forward.

The Eagles went goalless for the quarter, while the Blues kicked four goals and wasted numerous scoring opportunities. Fevola kicked three of his side's eight behinds for the term."
