An undermanned Essendon defied the odds to record an important win and bring West Coast's winning streak to an end. The Bombers kicked seven goals in the first quarter before West Coast stumbled into gear in the second and took the lead going into halftime. Essendon took back the momentum in the third quarter and from there held off the Eagles to take a 22 point win. Ben Cousins had 31 possessions and a goal and Daniel Kerr had 3 goals to go with 27 possessions, but too many Eagles had below-par games.

The Age[]
"At half-time, West Coast had only a three point lead, but had seized the momentum. When Chris Judd - who was kept in check by Mark Johnson throughout the day - goalled little more than a minute into the quarter, the Eagles appeared ready to shake off their sluggish starts.
Kerr was sitting on the bench at the beginning of the quarter - having his left foot attended too - and when he did reappear at the five minute mark, Forster-Knight ran with him and was able to curb his influence. As part of the rotation Forster-Knight spent time on other Eagles but his effort to slow Kerr down was crucial.
Despite 13 minutes of dominance, the Eagles could not put the score on the board. David Haynes, Rowan Jones, Glen Jakovich and Daniel Chick all missed goals that would have pushed the Eagles further in front. Their inability to seize control was punished when first Adam McPhee - who finished the day with four telling goals playing off the wing against Andrew Embley - then Lloyd goalled to level the scores.
From that moment on, the Bombers were never headed. They were too physical, with Jason Johnson tough and hard all day. Solomon lifted his work rate and started to drive across the ground and Danny Jacobs was mopping up in defence. Essendon eventually laid 69 tackles to West Coast's 39."[2]
