West Coast were embarrassed by a Saints side that had recorded just two wins in the first nine rounds. St Kilda were devastatingly accurate in front of goal, kicking 12 straight before registering a behind, and had the game well and truly sewn up at the final change with a 75 point lead before a goalless final quarter that made the scoreline slightly less disastrous from a Eagles viewpoint. Andrew Embley kicked three of his four goals in that final term and Chad Fletcher had 23 disposals to lead the Eagles, who weren't helped by the pre-game withdrawals of Glen Jakovich with a heart complaint and Michael Gardiner with his ongoing hamstring injury and then a broken collarbone suffered by Troy Wilson during the game.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"In for his first game of the year after a pre-season stumble in a backyard pothole brought knee surgery, Peter Everitt started in the centre and immediately dragged the likes of Thompson, Nick Dal Santo and especially Hayes into the game. Half an hour into the first term, the Saints had easily won seven of 10 centre clearances.

But it was up forward that Everitt engineered even more. After Stephen Milne had opened the scoring within the first 30 seconds, and West Coast levelled, the ruckman snatched a loose ball at half-forward, barrelled past two opponents, grabbed his own stray handpass and slung through a goal.

By the end of the quarter, he had booted another and set up two more. More than that, Everitt also caused constant match-up problems for the Eagles, with Hunter, Travis Gaspar, Darren Glass and Ashley McIntosh never able to fully contain the rotating likes of Everitt, Hamill, Nick Reiwoldt and Stewart Loewe."[1]
