From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The Eagles had two forwards in peak form in Scott Cummings, who kicked eight goals to take his season's tally to 48, and Phil Matera, with four, but couldn't find one other goalkicker, the Blues outscoring the Eagles despite going into their forward line nine less times during the match.

Malthouse was fuming after the game and targeted a thinly veiled criticism at the standard of umpiring, in particular, a mark and/or free kick that wasn't paid to Ashley McIntosh in the last quarter, which resulted in an important Carlton goal. But the umpires were not the only ones to cop the wrath of Malthouse, who slammed the performance of his own players, labelling them as complacent."[1]
