West Coast demolished the visiting Magpies and were unlucky not to win by more than their eventual 57-point margin after squandering numerous chances in front of goal. Experienced Eagles pair Ross Glendinning (10 marks, four goals) and John Annear (26 possessions, three goals) were among the best players on the ground.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Ruckman Alex Ishchenko was best on ground as he returned to the aggressive mood he had early in the season before a couple of reports tamed him.

Other VFL newcomers in centreman Murray Wrensted and defenders Dean Laidley, Michael Brennan and Mark Zanotti were in fine touch. Rovers, Don Holmes and David Hart, produced six valuable goals between them.

Their contribution meant those Eagles with greater VFL experience who had previously been holding the team together - Dean Turner, Robert Wiley, Ross Glendinning, Steve Malaxos and John Annear - could play supporting roles for a change."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles won 19.23 (137) to 11.14 (80) in what should have been a much bigger win but for some woeful mistakes in front of goal by the home team.

The match drew the biggest crowd yet for an Eagles match, 35,444, on a windless sunny public holiday as evidence of the Magpies' huge nationwide following.

But they went away disappointed with the contest and the lacklustre display by Collingwood.

The big ruckman, Alex Ishchenko, dominated around the ground for West Coast, which had the consistent Murray Wrensted in charge in the centre and ruck-rover John Annear a constant source of drive."[2]
