Spurred on by Mick Malthouse's resignation announement mid-week, West Coast defied their late-season form slump to overcome the Bulldogs in a tight finals contest. A big second quarter was the key for the Eagles, and their defensive line which, led by Guy McKenna and Glen Jakovich, had been on top of their opponents throughout, was able to hang on when the Dogs threatened to steal the win in the dying moments. Jakovich was West Coast's best with 28 possessions and Scott Cummings kicked an invaluable four goals in his 100th AFL appearance.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"In their worst display for several weeks, if not months, the Bulldogs struggled with their skills, made dozens of errors and were stricken with an apparent lack of confidence. To the frustration of their fans, they often came unstuck just as they appeared set to score.

While the Eagles were better than they have been for weeks, they were still well short of their early-season form. The Doggies were so far beneath their best that the Eagles didn't have to play stellar football.

Once the Eagles established their modest advantage in the first half, they successfully closed the match down in trademark defensive style, with Jakovich dominating Chris Grant."[1]
