West Coast overcame a desperate Collingwood to earn a week's break and a spot in the final four with a narrow victory at the WACA. Collingwood surged from four goals behind at the last change but were unable to close the gap as time expired. David Hynes was an unlikely star with a team-high 23 possessions along with eight marks and 21 hitouts.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The Magpies' revamped forward structure almost carried them to an amazing victory, but Eagle forward Chris Lewis and leaping ruckman David Hynes managed to thwart an upset.

The highly talented Lewis snapped truly on his left foot midway through the term, and with two points separating the teams at the 25-minute mark, he figured twice in a passage that enabled Brett Heady to seize on a lose [sic] ball and snap accurately from the goal square.

Hynes had the formidable task of matching it with his taller and more bulky opponent Damian Monkhorst, and more than vindicated his position in the 21 ahead of Ryan Turnbull.

Hynes' dominance of the contest forced Monkhorst off the field for periods in the second half."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"With the Magpies trailing by 24 points at three-quarter time, the visitors needed a special effort to win despite kicking with the aid of a four-goal breeze.

And it came in the form of Brown.

He kicked three goals and had a hand in another as Collingwood stormed back into contention.

But it was to no avail when the final siren sounded, leaving Collingwood two points in arrears, 12.8 (80) to 11.16 (82)."[2]
