From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The story to this game was told at either end. A barrage of attacks by the dour Eagles and their supposedly undermanned attack. Just eight goals from the talented and multi-pronged Demon attack. One myth exposed, one season ended, and all before the three quarter-time siren.

By then, the Eagles had turned a two-goal half-time lead into a nine-goal three quarter-time buffer thanks partly to a stiff breeze that pushed the ball towards the scoreboard end, but mainly to the Eagles' midfield, which did so with far greater force.

Perhaps, if there was a full-time moral for the Demons, it came in the form of a cliche: the wind does not kick any goals for you. When it had the opportunity to bridge a big, but by no means insurmountable, lead in the second quarter, Melbourne seemed to sit back, perhaps with that expectation in mind.

That gave the Eagles' midfielders, particularly the brilliant movers Chris Mainwaring and Dean Kemp, the time and space in which to create several damaging attacks that were capped off, usually by Brett Heady."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"West Coast took full control after half-time, kicking nine goals to two.

The Eagles' midfield of Chris Mainwaring, Dean Kemp and Tony Evans cut Melbourne apart.

Beside Heady, Sumich kicked three goals and seven other Eagles players recorded majors.

Melbourne's potent forward line was well curbed by solid Eagles defence led by centre half-back Glen Jakovich."[2]
