Pre-season 2016

West Coast had mixed results during the pre-season, with an understrength side thrashed by Adelaide first up before the senior players returned to pip Gold Coast and demolish Essendon.

Format

Each side to play three NAB Challenge games. As with recent years there is no Grand Final and no pre-season premiership. As is customary in the pre-season, goals kicked from outside the 50m arc are awarded nine points.

The concept of substitutes has been eliminated as it has with the premiership season. For the early games, sides have eight interchange players. In the final round, that is reduced to six on the bench and a cap of 90 rotations per team.

New rules and interpretations include free kicks for lifting, slinging, driving or rotating tackles with excessive force, and for deliberate out of bounds against a player for "not showing enough intent to keep the ball in play".
