Pre-season 1999

West Coast were knocked out of the Ansett Cup in the first round but won the majority of their scratch matches.

Rules

The 16 teams faced off in a sudden-death knockout competition, with losing sides sent to play scratch matches. The league experimented with a number of rule changes, in particular bounces being replaced by ball-ups around the ground. Quarters were reduced to 17.5 minutes and benches were increased to six players.
