A beautifully skilled wingman, Phil Narkle and his older brother Keith played in premierships with Swan Districts in 1982 and 1983, with Phil adding the Sandover Medal to his premiership medallion in ’82. Although Keith was captain for the Black Ducks’ 1984 hat-trick victory, Phil missed out after shifting east to play for St Kilda in the VFL.

St Kilda career[]

Narkle, who sported a distinctive helmet due to several concussions suffered early in his career, played 48 games in three seasons with the Saints before heading home in time to form part of the inaugural Eagles side.

West Coast career[]

The quick and nimble Narkle was an instant sensation with his new club, earning maximum Brownlow votes in the team’s historic win over Richmond. Unfortunately, he was only able to manage 9 games in the 1987 season due to injury, although he was able to represent WA in the State of Origin clash with the Vics and won All-Australian honours for his efforts in that match.

Narkle missed the whole 1988 season through injury, and was dropped off the club’s list at the end of the year. Although he returned to the side in 1990, he was able to add just another nine games to his career tally. He did, however, add a third Swan Districts premiership that year.

Post-VFL/AFL career[]

After winning Swan Districts’ best and fairest in 1991 (having won it once previously in 1981) and captaining the club for the 1992 and 1993 seasons, Narkle was named on the wing in Swans’ Team of the Century (with brother Keith on the interchange).

Narkle also served for several years as West Coast’s indigenous liaison officer.
