Hard-working utility Patrick McGinnity contributed well at AFL level despite his limitations.
West Coast career[]
McGinnity first came under notice in the 2007 national under-18 carnival, where he memorably shut down Vic Metro star and future Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and was selected in the All-Australian side. After being overlooked in the national draft, West Coast selected him in the pre-season draft.
Early career[]
McGinnity spent 2008 at Claremont, pressing for senior selection late in the year before being struck down by glandular fever. He appeared for West Coast in the 2009 NAB Cup, drawing headlines after he broke his jaw in a collision with Collingwood's captain Nick Maxwell that saw Maxwell suspended, and then let off on appeal. After that setback, McGinnity fought his way back through Claremont's ranks to make his senior debut late in the season, and played seven of the last eight games.
Regular senior appearances[]
In 2010 McGinnity played the majority of games, generally as a lockdown defender and occasionally as a midfield tagger. That pattern continued in 2011, with McGinnity playing 19 games including the side's three finals. He missed a game late in the season after being suspended for a particularly nasty sledge at Melbourne opponent Ricky Petterd.
McGinnity was again a regular in the side in 2012, though in a new role as a defensive forward. He played 21 games, kicking 11 goals including a pair in the final-round loss to Hawthorn.
On the fringe[]
Struck down by a back injury in the early part of 2013, McGinnity returned to the side in round 13 but was suspended two rounds later for two matches for a sling tackle on Adelaide's Bernie Vince that left the Crow dazed. He returned later in the year and played the final four games.
After spending the first half of the 2014 season at East Perth (apart from a brief appearance as a late call-up against Geelong), McGinnity was given a chance to fight for his spot on the list in the second derby. He impressed enough to hold his spot for the final nine games of the season and win a contract extension. McGinnity started the 2015 season in the senior team as a defensive forward but lost his spot, then broke his wrist playing for East Perth. He returned to AFL action but was dropped again late in the year and was an emergency for the Grand Final.
Although he was often in the emergencies, McGinnity was forced to toil away at East Perth for the first half of 2016 before getting a call-up against Essendon, where he kicked a career-high four goals. He played the next two games but was then dropped and finished up back in the WAFL. McGinnity announced his retirement at the end of the season, although he was doubtful to receive a new contract.
Post-AFL career[]
McGinnity remained at East Perth, and was named the Royals co-captain for the 2017 season.[1] He won East Perth's best and fairest in 2018, in a three-way tie with Luke Partington and Matthew Allen.[2]
